Venturing leadership training is designed to provide all youth and adult leaders with a series of simple but effective training opportunities that will meet the varying needs of Venturing leaders. All sessions are flexible so that the council training team can construct the best plan to meet local conditions. The plan requires a minimum of equipment and materials and is scripted to support those instructors with limited Venturing experience.

The continuing success of Venturing across America depends upon the program skill and enthusiasm of volunteer adult leaders. It is hoped that this plan will provide them the necessary knowledge and inspiration.

OBJECTIVES

The Venturing leadership training plan is designed to:

Convey an understanding of how Venturing achieves the purposes of the Boy Scouts of America.
Teach the best methods of program planning and use of resources.
Give insight into the skills of leadership.
Provide ongoing opportunities for communication, idea sharing, and updating of techniques.
Share information about local and national program support, activities, and resources.
Provide each leader with the specific skills and tools available for his or her job.
Encourage recognition and inspiration for all leaders.

DEFINITION OF A TRAINED VENTURING ADVISOR

An adult Venturing leader is considered to be trained after completing the sessions found in the Adult Venturing Leader Basic Training.

Orientation /Fast Start Training

New Crew Fast Start explains the Venturing program and details the leadership roles of crew youth officers and the crew Advisor. This video is also included in Adult Venturing Leader Basic Training.

New Crew Start-Up Orientation, No. 25-878, shows how using the Venturing program planning process can get a Venturing crew up and running and off to a successful start. It also provides helpful information for the first meeting between Advisors and youth. Details on crew operations, program planning, and elected youth officer training can be found in the Venturing Leader Manual, No. 34655A.

Venturing Leader Specific Training

Developed for Venturing Advisors, assistant Advisors, and crew committee members, this training incorporates Venturing's current adult leader training. New Leader Essentials and Venturing Leader Specific Training can be completed in one day, after which the leader is considered to be trained.

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills

Outdoor skills are critical to the success of the Scouting program, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills will provide leaders with the basic outdoor skills information needed to start a program right.

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is the required outdoor training for all Scoutmasters, assistant Scoutmasters, and Varsity Scout coaches. The skills taught are based on the outdoor skills found in The Boy Scout Handbook. The course is also ideal for Venturing leaders because it focuses on skills that build confidence and competence in leaders conducting outdoor camping experiences.

The course is a day and a half long, but a leader can move at an accelerated pace by demonstrating mastery of a specific skill. The emphasis is on the skill, rather than on attending the course.

Crew Officers' Seminar (elected officers' basic training)

This training experience is conducted by the crew Advisor or ship Skipper to orient newly elected youth officers, plan programs, and develop the annual crew activity schedule. The seminar outline can be found in New Crew Start-Up Orientation, No. 25-878.
